AI Driven Search — A paradigm shift

It is evident that AI will fundamentally change every software category and now we will experience one such inflection point in the search engine arena.

Microsoft has revealed its AI powered Bing this week, that the search engine now has the AI tech behind ChatGPT under the hood. The service also includes a chatbot that can answer your queries in conversational style, letting you use it for things like planning travel or researching home improvement projects and more.

Web search hasn’t changed in decades, but with the introduction of this new AI powered search, the delivery of information will be more fluid and quicker than the traditional method where you have to scroll through many URLs and find out what is relevant to you.

With the power of AI, search takes a paradigm shift with a completely new user experience. A total reimagination of how you interact with search, Browser, and chat by pulling them into a unified experience. This will unlock a completely new way to interact with the web. The new chat-based interface is quite comfortable for complex searches. Say you wanted to plan a trip with detailed trip itinerary, or you may want to research on what gadget to buy. These use cases are better served by the interactive chat interface. The chat experience empowers you to refine your search with appropriate prompts, until you get the complete answer you are looking for by asking for more details, clarity and ideas. The results also include relevant links so you can immediately act on your decisions.

There’s a waiting list for the AI-powered Bing service now, and you can apply for early access. Microsoft says it’ll be broadly available and free to use in the coming months. Nevertheless, the technology will have to overcome concerns about accuracy and safety.

Bing AI will get integrated in the Edge’s sidebar sooner. We may have to wait a bit for the mobile experience. You shall notice the two new AI-enhanced features in Edge browser namely, “chat” and “compose.” These will be embedded within Edge’s sidebar.

For decades, Google has dominated search engine market. Now with AI driven search, the market dynamics will undergo a drastic change. I am excited to see how the future of search would look like with this intensively competitive market. What will happen to other smaller players?

Expect AI to be the big buzzword for the entire tech industry throughout the rest of the year, as Microsoft and Google kick off a battle for the future of search and AI. That said, there’s another question here: can we really afford to rely on AI-created answers?
