Pay-as-you-go Licensing for Power Apps

Here is a good news for Power Apps users. Microsoft is rolling out a usage-based model to pay for Power Apps and related Power Platform services through Azure subscriptions. This is the pay-as-you-go option. Yes, this one is different from the pay-per-user based model which is already available for Power Apps.

“Customers only pay for what they use with the new pay-as-you-go plan, giving them more flexibility to get started with low code and low risk and then scale their investments over time based on the usage patterns of their solutions.”

Will cost you around $10 per active user per app per month. So, this is like a per app license, but you’re not paying for every user but you’re paying per active user. This model will be useful for apps where the usage is unpredictable or occasional or you just want to get started & you don’t want to make a huge commitment buying license.

If you are a large organization with thousands or tens of thousands of employees and they’ve got an idea for an app that they have to roll out to everyone and the idea of paying even a per app license is too much, this would be a classic option to start. Say for example, you have a HR process scenario, and you know it’s a performance appraisal application and everyone needs access to it. But people are only going to login like twice in a year to key in to submit self-appraisal forms. This is where this pay-as-you-go model will really become a perfect choice.

You shall only pay for active users and an active user is anybody who logs in to that app at least once in a month. Now they can log into the app lots of times during that month and it still only counts as one. But let’s say we’ve got a thousand users and only 10 of them use the app in that month. Then you’re only paying for those 10 users. So, it really allows you to get this pay as you go a good fit in this scenario.

How to subscribe?

When you sign up, you will be able to connect it to your azure subscription and so you’re going to connect through that same platform for billing through azure.

In Power Apps or the Power Platform admin center, you can link environments to an Azure subscription using a billing policy.

Once an environment is linked to an Azure subscription, usage of apps and any Data verse or Power Platform request usage above included amounts is billed against the Azure subscription using Azure meters.
